Presidental Limousine Shown at Republican Convention

Posted on October 1, 1996 by LCT Staff - Also by this author

A black 1967 Lincoln Continental limousine was unveiled at the Republican National Convention in San Diego. A piece of history, the limousine carried Presidents Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Carter, as well as other dignitaries from October 1968 to April 1978.

The car, while similar to other Continentals, is “really a rolling fortress,” says Bill George, Western Region corporate news manager for Ford. Almost two tons of armor plating was added, bringing the car’s total weight to more than 11,000 lbs.

The roof of the car is two inches higher than the conventional Continental. The windows and transparent bubble top are bullet proof and thicker than the glass plastic used in fighter planes.

The vehicle is carried on four heavy duty truck tires, each housing an inner steel disc with a hard rubber tread, which would allow the car to be driven up to 50 miles at top speeds with all four tires flat.

Ford Motor Company restored the car, which was described by the 1977 Guiness Book of Records as “The most expensive car ever built.” It will be donated to the Richard Nixon Library and Birthplace in Yorba Linda, CA.
