General Patton Used Limousines Extensively After WWII

As World War II was ending, the United States Army Transportation Corps began to increase its use of limousines for transportation of heads of state returning to their native lands and visiting congressmen, cabinet officers, and other personnel with VIP status. Army generals also began using these limousines for staff cars.

The Jeeps and Command Cars used throughout the war became less used. General Patton followed this trend. The Spartan military vehicles had all but disappeared by the time Patton had transferred from the Third Army to the 15th Army in 1945.

The Cadillac limousine that Patton rode in, and ultimately suffered fatal injuries in, has been restored and is now on display at the Patton Museum of Cavalry & Armor in Fort Knox, KY. The limousine is a four-door with two covered spare tires, one on each front fender, and features bullet headlights with smaller parking lights on top of each fender and European flipper arm turn signals. The interior has taupe mohair with black leather front seats. Features include two jump seats behind the front seat; roll-up divider window; and a microphone for the rear seat.

A number of misconceptions exist concerning General Patton’s choice of vehicles. Many people assume that since Patton commanded a tank Army, he must of had a tank for his own personal use. Although he used several different vehicles when he was in command, the only combat-type vehicle he used was an M20 armored car.

Another misconception is that Patton used his own personal car in Europe. None of his biographies indicate that he ever had a privately owned vehicle in Europe. The difficulties of transporting a vehicle overseas in war time or shortly after would be great for someone of even Patton’s wealth. The Army Transportation Corps had vehicles of all types and styles available for his use.

Indications are that he did not use a single vehicle but changed a number of times during the war and after.

U.S. Army Signal Corps photos show at least 12 different Series 75 limousines manufactured by Cadillac in Army service. Most of these are 1938 and 1939 model years.
