New Goodyear Technology Keeps Tires At Optimal Air Pressure

Posted on March 26, 2012

GENEVA, Switzerland — Automotive Fleet reports that Goodyear Tire & Rubber have developed a new tire technology called “Air Maintenance Technology” that will keep tire inflation at optimum pressure without any external pumps, electronics or driver intervention. Goodyear displayed AMT at the Geneva International Salon d'Auto.

Government and industry research has shown that underinflated tires can result in a 2.5% to 3.3% decrease in fuel economy, and Air Maintenance Technology potentially could result in  fuel cost savings for operators.

Last year, the United States Department of Energy's Office of Vehicle Technology awarded Goodyear a $1.5 million grant for research, development and demonstration of the AMT system for commercial truck tire to be conducted at Goodyear's Innovation Center in Akron, Ohio. Goodyear also received a grant from the Luxembourg government for research and development of an AMT system for consumer tires at Goodyear's Innovation Center in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg.

The company has not said when this technology will be available on the market.
