Uber Tries To Maneuver Amid Mounting Legal Fights

Highlights of all things Uber and TNCs from today and the past week:

Uber Appeals Class-Action Decision: Uber this week moved to appeal a decision that grants class-action status to a lawsuit brought by its drivers. As The Wall Street Journal reports, the company filed a request for appeal on Tuesday, arguing that the ruling from US District Judge Edward Chen was "manifestly erroneous." The Verge article here

What's Riding On The Uber Lawsuit: Fear it or embrace it, an employment shift is under way because technology is too efficient in too many ways to be impeded. As the old world (taxicabs, hotels, flea markets) makes room for the new (Uber, Airbnb, eBay), jobs will come and go, and so will job classifications. Chicago Tribune article here

Attorney Withdraws From Uber Idea Theft Suit: Despite making headlines and a fancy press conference back in May, one man’s lawsuit against ride-hailing company Uber for allegedly stealing his idea has lost a key player: the man’s attorney. Fortune Magazine article here

Uber Deploys New Tool To Woo Business Customers: Uber is expanding its Uber for Business feature to include what it calls "Business Profiles." These new profiles will now allow for quick on-the-fly profile switching for travelers who use Uber accounts for both business and pleasure. article here

Uber Just Can't Stay Out Of Vegas: After a hard-fought battle, Uber is now running once again in Las Vegas. The TNC just e-blasted its users announcing it has returned to Sin City, a day after gaining operating permits in Nevada. After Uber failed to comply with state licensing protocols in Nevada — as it has been known to do — the service was banned last year. The Verge article here

Second Taxi App Hits NYC Market: Earlier this month, New York City taxis got a new app called Arro to help them challenge Uber's dominance in the e-hail market. Now comes another entrant, Way2Ride, that allows users to both hail and pay for yellow and green taxis. Crain's New York Business article here
