Michigan Couple Cruise Into Retirement With Limo Venture

Posted on August 17, 2011

HUBBARDSTON, Mich. — One Michigan couple is enjoying a unique hobby during their years of retirement. Pat and Doug Campbell own, operate and enjoy Paddy Wagon Limo, a small limousine service they run out of their house.

“It’s been fun. We’ve been doing birthdays, anniversaries and bachelor parties,” said Pat, a 64-year-old former bus driver of 31 years for the Pewamo-Westphalia school district. After retiring two years ago, she expressed the desire to drive a limousine. After a small amount of searching, she found a 1993 Lincoln model for sale in Saranac, which she test drove and purchased right away.

She said she came up with the business name by remembering the children she previously chauffeured calling her “Paddy.”

Now, she and her husband book events weekly, which are sometimes celebrations, and other times surprises for people who have never ridden in a limousine. Pat said she enjoys the job because limos are typically rented when a happy occasion is taking place. “(I like) to see the people and how happy they are to ride in a limo. It’s about people doing what they’ve never gotten to do. Money isn’t the objective,” she added.

The service, which is only one year old, has been gaining popularity in Ionia and surrounding counties. It has been seen in parades, holiday celebrations and business parties.

Although Pat thoroughly enjoys the endeavor, the hobby is something which took her by surprise. “I never thought I’d be doing it,” she said. She said it has created additional fun within her life, and can let others her age realize retirement does not mean one just has to sit around.

Doug, 69, is a retired employee of the Lansing Capital Region International Airport, also helps drive the vehicle and attends the appointments with Pat. He said he also loves to see the faces of clients light up when surprised with a limo ride, and enjoys the ability to travel to different locations.

Pat said she hopes she can provide happiness for individuals and provide the chance for people to do something they have not done before. “A younger person would do it more for the money, but we do it as a hobby. We enjoy making people feel good. We have fun with it,” Doug said.
