Boston Livery Chauffeurs Under Scrutiny

Posted on October 4, 2013

BOSTON, Mass. —  Many drivers applying for Boston livery permits to chauffeur everyone from airport commuters to prom-
goers have checkered histories
behind the wheel, including repeat license suspensions and numerous car crashes, a Herald review found — prompting one city official to sound the alarm.

“You’re kidding me,” City Clerk Maureen Feeney said when told of the dangerous drivers. “They are transporting people in and out of this city. There should be some kind of background check and some kind of oversight.”

Applicants for livery licenses are not asked about their criminal history or driving records, Feeney said. They are not even required to give their birth dates in the application. All they need is $65, a valid driver’s license and a Boston address to be granted a four-year certificate through the state Registry of Motor Vehicles.
