5 Quick Tips on Networking

NEW YORK CITY — One of the best ways to approach networking is to put yourself in the mentality of doing things for others as more important than doing things for yourself. It’s important to approach clients and business partners by finding out what their needs are, and then offering ways in which you can help. In this episode of Inc.com’s Ask Gerber segment, Scott Gerber, founder of the Young Entrepreneur Council, gives some practical advice on building successful business relationships.

“If you try to meet every single person and immediately make them into a prospect or a sales proposition, or somebody that you want something from, you will fail,” says Gerber. It’s essential that you put their needs before yours, and see how you could make them be more successful, and in whatever terms that means to them, it’s more important to be an asset than a one-time conversation.
