ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The percentage of motorcoach operators who said company revenue “increased greatly” during the last 12 months was at 9.5%, great news for the industry, according to a recent survey by the United Motorcoach Association. And 12.2% of respondents said that business was “significantly better” during the same time period.
Financial status was ranked significantly or slightly better by 61.5% of companies in the latest survey, a 4.2-point improvement compared to last year. This has prompted the percentage of operators who say they plan to purchase a new coach in the coming year to jump up by 11%.
Fatigue continues to be an issue for motorcoach operators, with 72% of companies saying that it is a main concern, which is higher than the 65% who reported this in 2012. But 86.5% percent of survey respondents opposed changing driver hours-of-service rules, and instead preferred to see mandatory fatigue management programs in companies rather than changes in hours-of-service rules.
A new expense facing operators is WiFi Internet connections on coaches. WiFi is provided by 64.1% of operators but most, 51 of 71 companies, charge nothing for it. For those who do charge, the average fee is $6 daily. Power outlets on coaches also are becoming common — 63.4% of operators provide 110-volt receptacle.
