Florida Limo Chauffeur Escapes Violent Robbery Attempt

Posted on April 2, 2013

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — In the early morning of March 27, a 2013 Lincoln MKT Town Car stretch limousine belonging to Alpha Limousine Service of St. Petersburg, Fla., was involved in an attempted robbery in which bullets riddled the vehicle, harming two passengers with non-life-threatening injuries.

The chauffeur, who had a concealed weapons permit, returned fire and got away. He found police officers nearby to whom he reported the incident.

According to the St. Petersburg Tribune, the limousine had picked up eight passengers on the evening of Tuesday, March 26, and brought them to a nightclub in downtown St. Petersburg, Fla.

Afterwards, the limousine took the party to a convenience store, at which point police said some of the limo passengers may have been “intentionally flashing large sums of cash at the store, which caught the attention of people in the Chrysler [300] and a silver Kia.”

Those two vehicles then followed the limousine and pulled up on either side, “working in concert with each other to slow or stop the limo,” a police spokesman said.

Alpha Limousine CEO Terry Kurmay said he believed the chauffeur, whose brother was also in the limousine, saved the lives of the passengers. “Thank God, you know, that he did have a concealed weapons permit,” Kurmay said. “"I know that neither one of them was headed off to work thinking that they were going to entail in a gun battle with anybody."

The chauffeur is not expected to face any charges and the suspects remain at large.

In the following video report from ABC Action News, Kurmay says he will be limiting service to the South St. Petersburg area, which has seen an increase in crime of 3.4% since last year.
