RICHMOND, B.C. — Aerocar Service expressed sympathy Tuesday to the family, friends and colleagues of a chauffeur killed in a vehicle crash along the Sea-to-Sky Highway. The chauffeur was driving one of Aerocar’s limousines when the accident occurred.

The Lower Mainland chauffeur was Shafiqur Rahman, 54, who had been with the Vancouver-based ground transportation company for 10 years. Rahman was respected as an excellent and professional chauffeur, who was well liked by his fellow chauffeurs, Aerocar’s staff, and all who knew him.

In an e-mail to LCT Magazine, CFO Doreen Ram wrote: “It is a shock for our entire industry and has been extremely empowering how our fellow limousine operators have reached out to show their support to Aerocar, our employees and chauffeurs.”

Aerocar has been advised that the RCMP are continuing to investigate the accident, which occurred on the Sea to Sky Highway Jan. 28 just before midnight, involving a Dodge Truck and the Aerocar limousine.

News reports have indicated that the driver of the truck, a 19-year-old man from Calgary, Alberta, is being investigated for impaired driving by drug (The Province). RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen said it’s alleged that the northbound Dodge truck crossed the center line, veered into the southbound lane, and hit the limousine.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, two sons and extended family, friends and colleagues at this difficult time, Ram said in a media statement. Aerocar Service will have on-site support for its staff and fellow chauffeurs of Rahman.

The staff will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continue as a leader in the ground transportation industry, Ram said. Rahman’s fellow chauffeurs have come together and begun fundraising efforts on behalf of his family. Donations from the community are being accepted. Aerocar will be establishing a trust fund at the Bank of Montreal.

As the accident is still under investigation, Aerocar is working with the RCMP and  Rahman’s family.
