WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The American Bus Association has formed the Bus Maintenance and Repair Council, known as BusMARC, to encourage motorcoach and intercity bus operators to apply best maintenance practices.
The ABA believes BusMARC will enhance safety for the hundreds of millions of people who travel by bus each year. BusMARC will give shop managers the tools they need to build and improve their programs. The council also will provide relevant information to help maintenance personnel with inspections and audits, and share information about the industry’s “best practices.”
The ABA created BusMARC because it believes the motorcoach companies of all size need help collaborating on maintenance and repair issues. Industry and government officials understand that motorcoaches on regular maintenance cycles are the safest vehicles on the road. BusMARC will bring together experts to advise on maintenance matters.
BusMARC seeks also to improve the relationships among motorcoach owner/operators, company maintenance directors, operations staff, and the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and businesses that make and supply replacement parts to the industry.
BusMARC's first Chairman will be Mike McDonal, the general manager of the Maryland-based motorcoach company Eyre Bus Tour and Travel, one of the industry's leading motorcoach companies in the Mid-Atlantic region. McDonal is a past chairman of the Bus Industry Safety Council (BISC) and serves on a number of key industry-related committees. Membership in ABA is not required to be a member of BusMARC. All motorcoach owners, operators, maintenance professionals, shop supervisors and leaders from other segments of the industry, are invited to join. The first meeting of BusMARC will be held at the ABA's Marketplace, Jan. 9-12, 2016 in Louisville, Kentucky.
"Recently ABA's leadership including its Board Chairman John Meier, Vice Chairman Don DiVivo, and board members began discussing the need and concept for BusMARC," McDonal said in a press release. "We believe developing BusMARC is the next step, because of the critical role maintenance is now playing when it comes to government compliance and the overall well-being of our travelers. In sharing the expertise of our industry's maintenance professionals, we can raise the standards and improve the relationship with the OEMs and others. It's our goal to make sure the buses on the road every day are as well-maintained as possible and to reduce the downtime of our equipment."
ABA Chairman John Meier added, "Mike McDonal will do a great job starting this important council. His leadership with the Bus Industry Safety Council, as its past chairman and as one of the industry's foremost safety and maintenance experts, will be critical developing BusMARC. Motorcoach safety and maintenance go hand-in-hand."
