Funeral Rage Plagues Chauffeurs In U.K.

DEAD WRONG: Funeral processions become the target of selfish motorists in one British city who cut in between limousines and hearses, making rude gestures and enraging mourners.

BIRMINGHAM, U.K. — Funeral processions in Birmingham are being hit by “hearse rage” with motorists hurling abuse or threatening gestures towards mourners.

City funeral directors spoke out about the rising problem, in the wake of a study carried out by The Co-operative Funeral Care which has nine directors in the West Midlands. The research showed more than 50% of drivers had seen other motorists cutting up hearses, breaking into procession lines or flinging hand gestures.

David Bastock, owner of C Bastock Funeral Directors in Olton, Solihull, said the problem caused considerable upset to mourning families.

“The level of courtesy shown to corteges is not what it would be many years ago. People are in a rush to be somewhere else,” Bastock said.

“Our corteges drive as a team and try to make sure other cars don’t cut us up but a lot of people, for whatever reason, perhaps because they don’t know it’s a funeral, will try to get between the hearse and the limousines.

“It is not nice when someone cuts in between the hearse and the first mourners’ limousine.”
