PHOENIX - A 22-year-old California woman was killed when her vehicle crashed head-on into a tour bus early Saturday morning east of Wickenburg on State Route 74.

According to a Department of Public Safety spokesman, the accident happened at 1:49 a.m. near Castle Hot Springs Road in Peoria.

Officials said it appeared that Kathy Wetherell, of Van Nuys, might have been trying to avoid an animal when she veered into the path of the bus.

"It's a very tragic time of year for family members," said Officer Robert Bailey with the Department of Public Safety.

Investigators say alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The Los Angeles Limousine Express Bus was traveling from Las Vegas to Phoenix when the accident happened.

Thirteen people on the bus were treated for some type of injury, according to officials. Three of the injured were flown to Valley hospitals. The three are said to be in serious condition.

Investigators credit the driver of the bus for keeping the accident from becoming much worse.

"It was the heroic efforts of the driver of the tour bus who was able to keep the bus from going off the road and rolling over," said Bailey.
