L.A. Operator Delivers Thousands of Turkeys to Needy

LOS ANGELES – Thousands of people stood in line for hours Tuesday to receive free turkeys and holiday meal fixings during the 21st annual Jackson Limousine Service Turkey Dinner Giveaway in the Hyde Park area.

Although the giveaway is an annual event, the nation's economic crisis made the event even more critical for people who never thought they would have to rely on charity.

Pam Watson told the station she waited in line for five hours.

"But it's worth it," she said. "It's a blessing. I thank God."

Organizer EJ Jackson, founder and president of Jackson Limousine Service, said there were 8,000 turkeys to be given away, but he vowed to buy more if that wasn't enough.

Actress Dawnn Lewis, perhaps best known for her work in "A Different World," was among those helping to distribute food during the event.

"As hard as times are for so many people right now, sometimes you just want to know that you don't have to be embarrassed, you're not by yourself," she told the station. "When you look up and down these streets and see all of the people here you know, `You know what, it's not just me."'
