DENVER — A grand jury Wednesday indicted a suspect in the 2007 murder of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams, prosecutors said.

District Attorney Mitch Morrissey announced at a news conference at the Denver Police Administration building that Willie Clark faces 39 counts - including two counts of first-degree murder - in connection with the drive-by shooting on January 1, 2007.

"An investigation shows that Willie Clark was present in the SUV (sports utility vehicle) that was used (in the drive-by shooting)," Morrissey said.

Williams was shot in the neck as he left a Denver nightclub in a limousine.

The killing came hours after the popular cornerback played in the 26-23 overtime loss to San Francisco that ended the Broncos' NFL season.

Two others with him in the limousine were also injured.

An 18-page indictment detailed the alleged events of the night.

The shooting took place after an argument between friends of Williams and another group of men outside a night club.

After a pair of scuffles, Clark asked a friend for a handgun, according to the indictment.

Witnesses say Clark departed in a white SUV. Then shortly after 2 a.m. someone in a white SUV fired multiple gunshots into Williams's limo.

Days after the murder, Clark was arrested for a probation violation.

According to the indictment, Clark wrote a letter to the Denver Police detectives in recent months in which he admitted to the killing of Williams.
