Truman Limo Featured in Parade

Posted on January 19, 2005 by LCT Staff - Also by this author - About the author

LEBANON, MO. – An historic Lincoln limousine once owned by President Harry S. Truman will take part in the inaugural parade of Missouri Governor-Elect Matt Blunt.

The vehicle, owned by funeral home owner Ken Howe, has been driven in several local parades, and has chauffeured visiting dignitaries of both political parties.

The limousine also holds a place in election year history. During the 1948 presidential election, General Motors refused to donate to Truman’s campaign, believing his chances of winning were slim. After Truman’s victory, he replaced all GM products in the White House garage with a fleet of Lincolns, designed exclusively for presidential use.

Howe purchased the historic car in 2003 from a Florida collector who meticulously restored it. After verifying the car’s authenticity, Howe discovered it was a twin to the presidential Lincoln on display at the Truman Library in Independence.

“Our car and the library limousine are one digit apart in serial numbers,” Howe said.
