It Costs to Park in Elizabeth, Newark

Posted on November 19, 2003

NEWARK, N.J. — Officials in Elizabeth and Newark, N.J., have banned livery vehicles that are not based in their cities from parking or sitting idle on public streets or private property.

The ordinances were passed after residents complained that sedans and limousines waiting for jobs at nearby Newark Airport were clogging their streets, according to Barry Lefkowitz, executive director of the Limousine Associations of New Jersey.

“I can’t even park in my cousin’s driveway, who lives in Elizabeth, if I’m in a livery vehicle,” noted Barbara Chirico, president of Gem Limousine in Woodbridge, N.J. Limousines can only stop to pick up or drop off clients in Elizabeth and Newark. Those caught parking could pay up to $200 in fines.

“Newark Airport has begun enforcing a similar ordinance, now that a number of construction projects are complete and more legitimate limousine parking spots have opened up,” Lefkowitz said. The LANJ was also looking for additional parking.
