Logan International May Increase Parking Fees

Posted on May 9, 2007 by LCT Staff - Also by this author - About the author

BOSTON — It could soon be more expensive to park at Logan International Airport if new garage fee proposals are approved. Travelers thinking of taking a taxi or limousine to the airport are also facing fee hikes. Airport officials want to raise the cost of economy parking from $16 to $18 per day, and hike the central garage daily rate to $24 from $22 effective June 1. In the Terminal B garage, which already charges $24 daily, rates for parking between 30 minutes and two hours would be boosted $1 or $2.

The Massachusetts Port Authority board meets May 17 to consider the proposed fee hikes. The proposals also include bumping airport taxi and limousine fees by 25 cents to $2.25 for taxis and $3.25 for limousines, effective July 1. Logan has not raised parking fees since April 2003.

It's not just travelers who are facing increased costs. Logan officials also want to raise monthly employee parking fees by $5. Airport spaces would increase to $130, spaces in Chelsea to $90, and spots at Logan Express lots to $65. Even if the increases are approved, Logan would still be cheaper than most other large U.S. airports. It could however, drive business to smaller regional airports, including Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in New Hampshire and T.F. Green in Warwick, R.I., where parking fees are considerably lower. Carrie Russell, a staff attorney with the Conservation Law Foundation environmental group, hopes parking fee increases would prompt more people to use mass transit.
