Cop Accused of Interfering in Williams Case

A New Jersey police officer was indicted for interfering in the case against ex-NBA star Jayson Williams, who was charged with fatally shooting a limousine driver on Feb. 14.

Officer Eric Allena, 27, was charged yesterday with second-degree official misconduct and third-degree tampering with witnesses. Allena, who is a friend of Williams, allegedly went to Williams? mansion just hours after limo driver Gus Christofi was killed.

?He had an opportunity that morning and that afternoon to talk to the witnesses,? said prosecutor Steven Lember. ?He told them to withhold information or to not give truthful statements.? Allena knew the witnesses were giving false statements and he failed to report it or make an arrest himself, said Lember.

Allena was suspended without pay after he turned himself in and surrendered his weapon. He was released on $10,000 bail. Steven Lieberman, Allena?s lawyer, said Allena was innocent and ?looks forward to proving it.?

Williams was charged with first-degree manslaughter. Prosecutors say he was recklessly handling a shotgun when it fired, hitting Christofi in the chest. He then tried to make it look like Christofi fired the gun himself.

Williams pled not guilty and remains free on $270,000 bail. If convicted on all charges, Williams could face 45 years in prison.
