Suffolk County May Form its Own TLC

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — If Assemblyman Fred Thiele (R-Bridgehampton) and county Legislator Ed Romaine (R-Riverhead) get their way, there will be a taxi and limousine commission in Suffolk County's future. Romaine has submitted a home rule message to the county legislature in support of a bill Thiele has placed before the state assembly, asking that Suffolk be allowed to form its own TLC in order to regulate taxi and limousine services originating in the county.

The aim, said Romaine, is to level the playing field for taxi and limo companies in the county that have experienced difficulty with providing services in Nassau County and in Manhattan. Rules and restrictions imposed on companies in Suffolk have made it difficult to pick up clients at the airport, in Manhattan, or at such locations as Nassau Coliseum, Jones Beach Theater, and other destinations.

"We were contacted by small limousine companies that do business in the city, saying that regulations imposed by the TLC there hurt their business," said Thiele. "Apparently if Suffolk County has its own TLC, with its own regulations, then they're exempt from the city's regulations."

To address the issue, Romaine has introduced a home rule message in support of Thiele's legislation. The initiative seeks authorization to permit the county to regulate taxis and limousines not only to ensure that proper safety and reliability standards are in place for the region's livery services but to make it possible for Suffolk to be in a position to obtain reciprocity agreements with Nassau County, New York City, and other neighboring governments.
