Drunk-Driver Convicted of Murder in Limousine Accident

MINEOLA, N.Y. — The drunk driver that crashed head-on into a limousine on the Meadowbrook Parkway in Long Island last year, killing two people, was recently convicted of two counts of murder.

The court ruled that Martin Heidgen, 25,displayed “depraved indifference” while he was driving the wrong way on a one-way parkway, eventually killing chauffeur, Stanley Rabinowitz, 59, and seven-year-old Katie Flynn. Heidgen’s blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit as he passed six cars and drove a distance of more than three miles in the wrong direction before he crashed into the limousine.

The Flynn family was returning from a wedding at 2:00 a.m. on July 2, 2005, in a limousine driven by Rabinowitz. Katie’s parents, sister, and grandparents were all injured in the accident.

A first for Nassau County, Heidgen’s conviction reportedly represents one of a few murder convictions won in fatal drunk driving cases anywhere. The sentence carries the same penalties as intentional murder, with a minimum conviction of 15 years to life. Legal experts, however, say the verdict has a good chance of being overturned.
