NYC Taxicab Drivers Threaten Another Strike Against GPS Mandate

NEW YORK CITY — The Taxi Workers Alliance (TWA) is threatening another work stoppage over the Taxi and Limousine Commission's (TLC) plan to place GPS software in cabs.

There's no official word on when the walkout would take place, but reports say it would happen around October 1, 2007. All cabs must have the software for their first inspection after that date.

The Alliance's leader did confirm that voting began earlier this week on whether to authorize the strike.

"The night drivers had voted to authorize the organized committee, if necessary, to call for another strike,” said TWA President Bhairavi Desai. “However, we're still going through the process of having our day driving members vote."

The TWA is also taking its protest a step further. The group is filing a federal lawsuit against the TLC and asking for a temporary restraining order to prevent the software from being installed.

The TWA held a 48-hour walkout earlier this month. The group estimated as many as 75% of the 13,000 drivers it represents stayed off the roads. But the mayor disputed those numbers.

During the walkout, the Public Utilities Commission gave livery companies permission to hail fares and pick-up passengers from taxi stands all over New York City. The strike was held while the city was hosting Fashion Week and the U.S. Open.
