Philly Taxicabs Now Equipped With Payment Terminals

Posted on December 13, 2006 by LCT Staff - Also by this author - About the author

PHILADELPHIA — Half of Philadelphia’s 1,600 licensed taxicabs are now equipped with a payment terminal by which residents can pay their taxi fares using a MasterCard PayPass card or fob from Visa or American Express. The new terminals are part of a collaboration between Verifone, taxi-technology vendor Taxitronic, and the Philadelphia Parking Authority (PPA).

The Omni 7000 terminal is located in the backseat area, facing the passenger, and is also designed to communicate with RFID payment-card readers as well as traditional magnetic-stripe cards. The device can also be used for routing and navigational information, work scheduling, and trip logs. Passengers can also use the terminal to automatically add a tip to the fare total.

This new system is one that could possibly be used in chauffeured transportation fleets to streamline payment and save time, though the PPA has no immediate plans to mandate this technology for limousines. It is estimated that the remaining 800 Philadelphia taxis will be fitted with the terminals by the end of 2006.
