NHTSA Issues September Recall Warning

Posted on November 1, 2001 by LCT Staff - Also by this author - About the author

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a recall warning on some vehicle.

The warning pertains to the 2000-2001 model years of the Lincoln Town Car, Navigator and the Ford Excursion that were manufactured from February to September 2000.

NHTSA?s study found that on certain passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, and light and medium duty pickup trucks, a switch located in the plastic cover of the wiper motor gear case could malfunction and overheat. The overheating could potentially result in loss of intermittent wiper function, loss of wiper park function, complete loss of wiper function, smoke, or ignition of the plastic cover material.

The report stated that the switch malfunction is most likely to occur when the intermittent setting of the wipers is being used, or when snow or ice obstructs the blades from returning to the "parked" position at the bottom of the windshield. Loss of visibility while driving increases the risk of a crash.

NHTSA recommends that operators who have one of these vehicles should take their vehicles to their local dealership for inspection.

Mechanics at the dealership will inspect the date code on the wiper motor. Motors built within the suspect time frame will have the wiper motor gear case cover replaced. NHTSA stated that owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Ford at (866) 436-7332.
