Jayson Williams will be arraigned on charges for the fatal shooting of a limousine driver, Costas Christofi, on Tuesday for June 7. Police said that they were also investigating an alleged death threat against a key prosecution witness.
Williams is charged with aggravated manslaughter, reckless manslaughter, hindering apprehension, witness and evidence tampering and aggravated assault, stemming from the Feb. 14 death of Christofi,. A probe may also launch a probe into the alleged death threat against key witness Kent Culuko.
Culuko received the threat in a telephone call at his parents? home in Mahwah, New Jersey, on April 26. According to Mahwah Police, the call came a day after reaching a deal with prosecutors to testify against Williams in exchange for pleading guilty to evidence and witness tampering.
Police said that they were treating the call seriously. Culuko told reporters that the message was -- "We got some cheese for a rat bastard. We're going to come over and mess you up."
According to prosecutors, Culuko admitted to helping Williams wipe his fingerprints from the .12-gauge shotgun used in the shooting and trying to impress the chauffeur's fingerprints on the gun to make the death appear a suicide, both at Williams' urging.
Prosecutors added that Culuko also admitted to instructing witnesses to lie to police about their whereabouts at the time of the shooting, also at Williams' urging.
