Massachusetts Operators May Face New Regulations

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. — All limousines and livery vehicles would be held to the same regulations as taxicabs, according to a proposal that may be considered by the city council.

At a recent hearing, the New England Livery Association (NELA) met with Taxi Commissioner Lisa Placancia to convince her to remove the proposal from the docket until a better plan is created. The proposal would require better driver background checks and vehicle inspections for all limousine and livery companies. Officials say the goal is to protect taxicab and limousine riders. It also comes in response to the many “gypsy” drivers operating taxicabs with livery license plates in order to avoid the cost to adhere to state taxi standards.

NELA says limousine companies already meet the high standards outlined in the proposal. According to officials, the city council may vote on the proposal Nov. 13.
