Motor Car Amendment Act Passes in Bermuda Senate

Posted on August 2, 2006 by LCT Staff - Also by this author - About the author

BERMUDA — The Motor Car Amendment Act passed in Bermuda, marking passage of a bill permitting full-time limousines on the island. The Act allows for up to 100 limousine licenses, the first 50 being offered to taxi drivers wanting to swap permits.

The Bermuda Taxi Association (BTA) was not in favor of the law, and BTA President Michael Ray said they did not see the reasoning behind it, even trying to lobby senators against the Act.

“I don’t know if the numbers are there,” Ray said. “I don’t know how many owners will switch their taxi permits for limousine permits.” Limousines, like taxis, will be fitted with GPS and linked with a central dispatching unit.
