EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND — Stretch limousines for “hen and stag” nights that carry more than eight passengers have not undergone adequate safety checks and are operating illegally, local officials have warned. They claim the growing trend to hire the American vehicles for parties has led to companies flouting regulations by carrying up to 16 passengers.
Around 11,000 stretch limousines are operating in the UK, compared to just 3,000 in 2003, with a flourishing trade in the UK's bigger cities, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen. Almost all are imported from the US. However, it is estimated that more than half the cars are carrying more than eight passengers, despite not having proper emergency exits, adequate legroom, and low ceilings.
