Holiday Spike Helps So-Cal Transportation Industry

VENTURA COUNTY. Calif. — Despite high fuel costs, about 5.6 million Southern Californians traveled this Christmas holiday period. The number of holiday travelers this season represented only a negligible increase over last year, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

About 80% of Southern Californian travelers, or 4.5 million, went by car, while 840,000 flew, according to the Auto Club. Another nearly 280,000 traveled by bus, train or cruise ship.

Airports throughout Southern California were also busy in the days after Christmas as hundreds of thousands of travelers return home for the New Year's celebrations. Hawaii was the top destination for those leaving by plane, according to a survey of AAA travel agents, while Mexico was the preferred cruise destination and Las Vegas drew a large share of drivers, as well as the Grand Canyon and San Diego.

The Auto Club recommends traveling at off-peak times to avoid delays. Joe Hart, a manager at Roadrunner Shuttle and Limousine Service, which provides transportation to airports throughout the region, said his company has been busy.

"Our business really picks up during Thanksgiving and December," Hart said. He expects the shuttle and limousine service will be busy through at least the first of the year.
