YORK, U.K. — Stretch limos will have to be licensed in York like any other private hire vehicles. The council's licensing and regulatory committee was told that stretched limousines had become extremely popular for all sorts of events, including school proms and “hen” nights.
Councilors said the safety of passengers on such trips had to be paramount and agreed to the licensing of vehicles and also their drivers. Licensing manager John Lacy has said previously people would feel more secure in the knowledge that businesses are licensed, vehicles are subjected to rigorous safety checks, and drivers have undertaken Criminal Records Bureau vetting by the council.
Dave Black, 29, who runs A1 Luxury Stretch Limousines, in Clifton Moorgate, York, has welcomed licensing, saying it would get rid of any "rogues" who might be operating.
