Cab Drivers Protest Bandit Limousine Bribery

Posted on November 22, 2006 by LCT Staff - Also by this author - About the author

TORONTO — The Toronto Coalition of Concerned Taxi Drivers recently protested “bandit” limousine drivers bribing hotel doormen in return for customers at the Westin Harbour Castle hotel in Toronto.

The cab drivers, blowing whistles and carrying handwritten signs, paced the sidewalk in front of the hotel, passing out fliers to other cabbies and people walking by. The coalition says limousine drivers bribing doormen is a commonly accepted practice that has existed for too long. The cab drivers claim limo drivers pick up passengers headed to the airport from downtown hotels following a tip from a bribed doorman, leaving taxis with shorter, low-fare rides.

Although municipal regulations mandate that airport limousine drivers pick up passengers by reservation only, city officials say it’s hard to determine whether or not the pick up was actually reserved.
