Limousine Operators Would Be Hard Hit by N.J. Sales Tax

TRENTON, N.J. — Limousine operators, the landscaping industry, and golf and health clubs would be among the hardest hit if state lawmakers agree to Gov. Jon Corzine's plan to extend the state sales tax to businesses that don't pay it now. A report by the nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services, using data from the state Treasury Department, showed that the extensions would raise $247 million in the next fiscal year. Nearly 60% of that would come from those three industries. Corzine also wants to raise the sales tax from 6% to 7%.

Limousine business owners would kick in $23.3 million in sales taxes. "This puts us at a real disadvantage in the industry because we compete with taxis that aren't taxed," said Michael Renehan, an officer in the Limousine Associations of New Jersey.
