LONDON – U.K. transportation ministers fear that “party car” limousines are extremely unsafe, and they are looking at potential legal and enforcement remedies. Some operators are not insured and others are possibly packed with 20 or more people when they should only carry eight passengers. Law enforcement officials aren’t able to do much about the problem because the laws governing limousines are vague. Imports of stretch limousines have risen from 3,000 in 2003 to 11,000 this year.
Around half of all municipal government authorities in the U.K. have no system for checking or licensing the limousines, which are mainly white Lincolns. Some limousine firms are now hiring out giant Hummer "party buses" with their own smoke machines and laser lights.
