Interstate Commerce Bill Passes House

Posted on November 14, 2001 by LCT Staff - Also by this author - About the author

The U.S. House of Representatives voted unanimously Tuesday to pass HR 2546, ?Real Interstate Driver Equity Act of 2001.?

Most commonly known as the Interstate Commerce Bill, HR2546 prohibits states from requiring a license or fee on a motor vehicle providing interstate pre-arranged ground transportation service.

The bill?s passage was a great victory for the limousine industry, said Barry Lefkowitz, governmental liaison and lobbyist for the National Limousine Association.

The bill now waits for its companion bill (S1223) to be passed in the Senate before it can be given to the president to sign into law. However, S1223 needs eight more senators to co-sponsor the bill before it will be called upon for a Senate vote.

Lefkowitz has encouraged operators to contact their respective senators in order to help pass this bill.

?You can make a tremendous impact with your calls,? Lefkowitz said.

Lefkowitz added that Congressmen Roy Blunt and Rob Andrews have requested quick action on S1223 from the Senate.
