Honda Hybrid Accord Can’t Compete with Toyota Prius

Posted on June 13, 2007 by LCT Staff - Also by this author - About the author

TOKYO — Honda Motor Co. recently announced it will discontinue is hybrid model Accord, only available in North America, in response to poor sales and the market domination of the Toyota Prius. The vehicle has sold 25,000 units since going on sale in 2004 and the Accord’s sales totaled 439 in May, while Toyota sold 24,000 Prius vehicles in that same period.

Honda said it will continue to make gas and electric models of its Civic sedan. A spokesman for the company said the decision underlines how hybrids tend to be more popular in smaller models because mileage improvements tend to be more pronounced. The company is promising a U.S. hybrid competitor in 2009. The Prius accounted for more than 40% of hybrid sales in the U.S. last year. Hybrids such as the Prius and Civic deliver as many as 50 miles per gallon, depending on driving conditions, but the hybrid Accord delivered fewer miles to the gallon.
