Americans Want More Independent Energy Policy

DETROIT – Yale University and General Motors Corp. have conducted polls that show Americans want energy independence from foreign oil. According to the Yale poll, 92% of Americans think the U.S. is too dependent on imported oil and 93% of Americans want the government to take action and develop "clean" energy sources like wind and solar power and hydrogen cars; 86% support increased funding for renewable energy research.

While 92% thought dependence on foreign oil was a serious problem, 68% said it was "very serious." Among Democrats and Independents, 96% want more fuel-efficient vehicles; 86% of Republicans called for more fuel-efficient vehicles. The Yale findings came from a Random Digit Dial (RDD) survey of 1,000 adults nationwide.

The GM poll, which was conducted by Peter D. Hart Research Associates, found that 43% of Americans agree that this needs to be the nation’s top energy policy priority. Of the 1,004 adults polled nationwide by GM, 20% said that the nation needs to improve fuel efficiency of vehicles and 19% want to reduce pollution and harmful emissions.

The same group wants automakers to improve gas mileage and safety features (36%); and 32% wants the industry to find alternatives to gas engines. These findings came just after Congress' rejection of a proposal to mandate greater fuel efficiency for minivans and SUVs.
