Chauffeur Killed in Limousine Accident

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — A chauffeur was killed earlier this week when he was thrown from his 2003 Lincoln Town Car limousine, which flipped as he was exiting the northbound Interstate 805 in Sorrento Valley, San Diego.

The driver, 61-year-old James Jay Shannon from Carlsbad, Calif., was on the Vista Sorrento Parkway off-ramp when the limo flipped around 3:15 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Brad Baehr said.

The vehicle, which was traveling at an unknown speed, drifted for an unknown reason and sideswiped the steel guard rail, authorities said.

The vehicle then overturned, throwing the man out and causing fatal injuries. The limousine landed on its wheels and about 100 feet of the guard rail was damaged. Baehr said Shannon was pronounced dead at the scene.

Crews shut the off-ramp down for more than seven hours for repairs and investigation, prompting a traffic alert that remained in place until the late morning.

Shannon is survived by his son, also named James, the medical examiner's office said.
