The CoachCompass

Posted on January 1, 2007 by LCT Staff - Also by this author

How far away are you from your original career goals? The CoachCompass says that the only thing standing between you and your career is a clear pathway toward getting there. Careers are no longer a linear part of life. People change careers many times throughout the years and experience a constantly evolving career cycle. The CoachCompass offers some tools that may make the process easier and more successful.

Choosing and charting your career course are the hardest parts of this journey. In the beginning of the book, is a quick career diagnostic that asks simple questions about you, like “Who am I?” and “What do I want?” From there, the CoachCompass follows the four stages of the career lifecycle — career planning, career development, career management, and career transition. Whenever a new career course is charted, the book asks its reader to identify all of the skills necessary to navigate through it.

The book uses real-life examples to illustrate its points in every chapter. One involves a man, “Will,” who has envisioned himself as a veterinarian all of his life. Another is about a woman named “Jan” who is laid-off from her job and doesn’t have the skills to be able to understand the next step in her career path. These examples help the reader apply the tools and skills in their own lives and learn how to react to the ever-changing career process. Aided also by a number of exercises, the CoachCompass is a great tool for anyone just starting out on a career path or someone who is thinking about completely changing course.
