LAS VEGAS — For the first time ever, attendees at the 2013 International LCT Show will have a chance to attend a motorcoach educational program hosted by the American Bus Association. One of the sessions will focus on tour bus safety.
This session will focus on three main topics:
I. The fundamentals of driver fatigue management and how to source and implement a successful program. Driver fatigue has been identified by both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration as a significant safety concern and leading cause of highway crashes.
II. What to provide clients on planning a trip that is compliant and safe for all parties.
III. Security. ABA has been instrumental in developing the Operation Security Transport training program, which was adopted as a baseline requirement from passenger carriers domiciled in New Jersey. It is expected that this program will form the baseline for new federal regulation to be issued in 2013 by the TSA.
The Tour Bus Safety Program will be presented by Norm Littler, ABA vice president of safety, security and regulatory issues. Littler also serves as executive director of the Bus Industry Safety Council and is the ABA’s chief safety and security officer.
Littler is the former Chairman of the Highway and Motorcoach Carrier Sector Coordinating Council. He has 38 years of transportation experience, 31 of which has been with the motorcoach industry. He holds an Insurance Institute of America accreditation in risk management.
He is also a full member in the Society of Automotive Engineers; chairman of the National Academies’ Transportation Research Board — Commercial Truck and Bus Safety Synthesis Program Oversight Committee; a member of the International Association for Counterterrorism and Security Professionals and the Roadway Safety Foundation.
Before moving to Washington, Littler worked for nearly 17 years at Motor Coach Industries, North America’s largest manufacturer of intercity buses, first in the research and development division and then as administrator for regulatory and product related legal affairs and risk management. He is a former member of the Canadian Air Force.
