Motorcoach Industry Provided Nearly 700 Million Trips In 2010

Posted on September 5, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The 2011 annual Motorcoach Census shows that the industry provided 694 million passenger trips and 76.1 billion passenger miles in 2010.

The Motorcoach Census is a benchmark study commissioned by the American Bus Association Foundation to measure the size and scope of the motorcoach industry in the U.S. and Canada. It is the only comprehensive data collection focused on the private over-the-road bus industry.

Below are some selected statistics from the study and a modal passenger comparison.

Modal Passenger Volume Comparison

  • Domestic Airlines: 717 million enplanements (international and domestic enplanements for U.S. airlines)
  • Motorcoach Transportation: 694 million passenger trips (U.S and Canadian passenger trips)
  • Amtrak: 28 million passengers

Industry of Small Business Serves North America
The 2010 census shows that the motorcoach industry continues to be a small business success story: More than 82% of industry operators own fewer than 10 vehicles.

“The small business network that makes up the motorcoach industry continues to provide a remarkable level of cost-effective transportation for our nation,” said Peter J. Pantuso, president of the ABA Foundation. “We are proud of the fact that, even in difficult times, our industry continues to change and grow to meet the demands of the traveling public.”
