WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has released a bulletin about the latest round of fake U.S. Department of Transportation letters that have been circulating among motor carriers. Letters dated March 16, 2012 saying they are from the “U.S. Department of Transportation Procurement Office,” and signed by “Julie Weynel – Senior Procurement Officer,” are fake. Julie Weynel is a fictitious identity.
The fraudulent letters attempt to obtain a response along with banking information from companies specifically targeted.
FMCSA said anyone who receives such a letter should notify local law enforcement agencies about possible fraudulent financial data collection activity. “Be suspicious when being asked for banking information from anyone,” FMCSA said in the bulletin.
