This first annual conference for the WINiT (Women In Travel) group was held July 26, 2014, in Los Angeles. WINiT founder Michelle Lee says the travel industry has 65% of women in its ranks, yet very few hold executive level positions. By having this organization, we can bring together professionals from all over the globe, and in any industry, and focus on the professional development opportunities that are lacking, she says.
A 2007 report by Catalyst, a nonprofit organization promoting inclusive workplaces for women, indicated that companies with a high representation of women on their boards outperformed their rivals with a 42% higher return in sales, 66% higher return on investment capital and 53% higher return on equity. Yet, in 2012 only 17% of board members in Fortune 500 companies were women, according to a separate 2013 Catalyst study.
