Uber Changing Its Tune?

Posted on December 5, 2014 by

One of the things that has perplexed me about Uber’s growth is the company’s reticence to address public concerns. I recently watched a video called “Riding Dirty: How Uber Takes Drivers and Passengers for a Ride|Nailed It!," which does a good job of detailing out most of those concerns regarding safety, regulatory compliance, salary claims, background checks, and subprime lending.

But recently, after Uber closed a $1.2 billlion round of funding and announced plans to expand into Asia Pacific, Travis Kalanick gave a quote saying he wants to lead his company in a humbler way and is seeking counsel from companies that have made similar mistakes during large growth periods.

“This kind of growth has also come with significant growing pains,” Kalanick wrote. “The events of the recent weeks have shown us that we also need to invest in internal growth and change.” He continues, “Done right, it will lead to a smarter and more humble company that sets new standards in data privacy, gives back more to cities we serve and defines and refines our company culture effectively.”

It will be interesting to see how this message is distributed throughout 2015. You can watch the video below.

Happy Friday.

Tim
