For about $10,000 consumers can upgrade their vehicles to an advanced cruise control setting that doesn’t replace the driver, but sure makes driving a lot more relaxing. The kit comes from the new startup aptly named Cruise Automation, and is designed to work like traditional cruise control, but with the added benefits of smart lane keeping, braking, and steering.
It’s not meant to be a replacement for a driver, and it’s not meant for automatic navigation, but it fills a void between the super high-end google driverless cars, and the traditional cruise control fitted vehicles. CEO Kyle Vogt says, “Everything on this car is priced for a consumer product.”
This article from The Verge thoroughly goes over Cruise Automation’s features, and lists the pros and cons. It’s interesting that the system so far doesn’t work in the rain, fog, or the dark, and that driverless technology still has a ways to go. But limo operators are already beginning to envision how business will change once these technologies can effectively hit the market. Maybe this Cruise Automation might be the first step.
