Be Forewarned ….
It’s Baltimore today, your town tomorrow.” Those words of warning from Mark Thistle are a heads-up for operators across the country to be alert for cash-strapped states and municipalities that are looking to squeeze operators for more tax revenue.
Thistle, president of Freedom Car, is part of the Baltimore Transportation Tax Coalition (BTTC), a newly formed limousine/taxi group that is leading the fight to combat a recent 25-cents per-passenger tax required for all passengers picked up in Baltimore.
And if you have been following LCT Magazine’s continual coverage of the fight by the Limousine Bus Taxi Operators of Upstate New York (LBTOUNY) to repeal the 2009 New York state law requiring operators to collect sales tax on all transportation services, you know that your state, city or municipality could be next.
I’ll be taking a closer look at both the Maryland and New York tax situation in the January issue (Industry Association column). In the meantime, let me know your thoughts on what could be a growing trend to further tax the industry.
